The River Club In Zambia

Aug 26th, 2011 Nicola Russell

The River Club is located on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River, a little way upstream from the world famous Victoria Falls. The River Club is the perfect location to combine with either a safari in Botswana, South Africa or Zambia.

The River Club has a distinct Edwardian atmosphere throughout. It offers a large airy lounge in which to relax, a dining room, a small library with interesting reads and parlour games and sweeping verandas with views stretching across the river. The grounds in which the River club sits are lush and well tended with tidy lawns on which to take lunch or enjoy a cool Pimms after a game of bowls. As the River Club is located 18kms upstream from the busy falls area, a stay here is a lot less chaotic and affords more of a tranquil setting.

The River Club has just ten luxurious split level thatched chalets that overlook the Zambezi River. All of the River Club chalets have en-suite facilities including a bath, shower, toilet and basin. The rooms are all completely open in the front giving guests the best possible views of the Zambezi. Each chalet also has a private balcony for spectacular views the river.

The Victoria Falls are one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and is one of the most stunning waterfalls on the planet. In addition to seeing the falls there are plenty of other activities to enjoy. From the River Club you might like to cruise the Zambezi at Sunset and drift silently past pods of hippo, elephant and crocodile with beautiful birdlife lining the river bank foliage. Or you can set out after lunch for a spot of fishing moor up and then enjoy a wonderful sundowner on the way back.

Just an hour along the river from the River Club are the magnificent Victoria Falls which simply must be explored. Afterwards if you have managed to stay dry with the assistance of umbrellas and anoraks supplied in your private vehicle then you might like to visit a local African Village just a short drive away. At the local villages and markets you can wander around and soak up real African culture and pick out a few trinkets to take home.

There and a variety of other activities such as game walks and drives in the national park, canoeing, white water rafting, bungi jumping, helicopter and microlight flights over the falls, an even elephant back safaris and river boarding, horse-riding & clay-pigeon shooting or alternatively you might just want to sit and absorb the amazing scenery. At the lodge you can relax in the wellness centre or enjoy a jog around the lodges running track.

Although The River Club is not a game lodge, the Zambezi National Park is located just across the river, and lion calls often travel across the river in the still of night. Rich birdlife is found in the area and hippo are regularly seen and heard along the length of the river.
